Curriculum

The course aims at training students to reach an adequate level of proficiency in both spoken and written Korean. It is designed to broaden students’ knowledge of Korean language and enhance students’ understanding of the differences between written and spoken forms of the language. The course provides students with further development of their language skills in a variety of cultural and social situations. On completion of the course, students will be able to participate in situational conversations equipped with a comprehensive knowledge of essential vocabulary and expressions for communicating in Korean.

We have selected the teaching curriculum developed by the renowned Ewha Women’s University. “Ewha Korean” are series of textbooks and workbooks, comprising of 26 volumes from level 1 through level 6, for students learning Korean as foreign language. As a comprehensive textbook, it covers four basic skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing; while fostering balanced development of these four skills, this textbook is designed with emphasis on enhancing speaking ability. The “Try it” section in each chapter is designed to help students improve their conversation skills without memorization and by creating their own dialogue according to a given situation and explanation of the flow of the dialogue and vocabulary. In addition, taking into consideration the demands and preferences expressed by students, levels 1 to 3 consist of two books each, and in levels 1 and 2, the instructions and explanations can be given in English, Chinese or Japanese by the students’ own choice.

Beginner – Levels 1 & 2

This course is open to complete beginners who are interested in learning Korean language and gaining basic knowledge of Korean culture. The aim is to provide students with a solid foundation in both spoken and written Korean, which will enable them to both express themselves with confidence in everyday life situations as well as to undertake further studies in Korean language and Korean culture.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to participate in simple conversations, involving topics related to daily life, and will have acquired a basic knowledge of the written forms of Korean language.

Level 1

  • This course introduces students to Korean sounds, alphabets, and basic grammar
  • Students are taught to read and write simple sentences by using simple tense
  • Students will acquire simple conversation skills which are useful in their everyday lives as well as in their work place such as greetings, introducing themselves, ordering food, purchasing items, etc.
  • This course focuses on learning Korean culture related to everyday life such as greetings, Korean names, etiquette, etc.

Level 2

  • With this course, students will be able to learn various adjectives to describe and express themselves
  • Deals with more concrete topics directly related to daily life tasks
  • Students continue to build on their vocabulary of simple functional words to obtain services such as placing simple orders, making purchases, requesting information, and making suggestions
  • Students will learn Korean culture related to everyday life such as table etiquette while dining

Intermediate – Levels 3 & 4

This course is offered to the students who have successfully completed Korean for Beginners. Applicants who have attained a comparable level in Korean from studying at other institutions (completed approximately 150 hours of tuition) may be recommended to start at this level following an assessment.

The course provides students with further development of their language skills in a variety of cultural and social situations. On completion of the course, students will be able to participate in situational conversations equipped with a comprehensive knowledge of essential vocabulary and expressions for communicating in Korean.

Level 3

  • This course deals with application of new grammar forms such as conjugations
  • Students gain the ability to handle daily life tasks such as taking messages, making comparisons, providing advice, explanation, etc. with confidence
  • Students are able to understand Korean culture more deeply
  • Special topics include the monetary unit of Korea, an introduction to Seoul and GimJang (the Korean word for the process of making Gimchi), etc.

Level 4

  • With this course, students are able to understand and use various tenses properly and to use appropriate communicative expressions with an understanding of the relationships between communicating partners
  • Students are able to combine proper daily expressions with technical terms so that it’s possible for them to speak about work-related topics more effectively in public areas
  • Students can ask for lost and found, cancel appointments, ask for somebody’s advice, opinion and views, etc.
  • This course offers opportunities to students to learn Korean age-old customs such as phrenological interpretation

Advanced – Levels 5 & 6

This level is offered to the students who have successfully completed Intermediate Korean. Applicants who have attained a comparable level in Korean from studies at other institutions (completed approximately 320 hours of tuition) may be recommended to start at this level following an assessment.

The course aims to advance students’ communication capabilities through various language activities including presentations, simulated conversations and free discussion. The course also aims to acquaint students with the current formats, terminologies and styles found in Korean writing, in the social, cultural as well as academic contexts, so as to deepen students’ interest and broaden their understanding of contemporary Korea. On completion of the course, students will be able to understand, analyze and summarize the key points of Korean articles, essays and extracts of advanced level Korean writing. They will also be able to carry out conversations and in-depth dialogues with Korean native speakers. On completion of the course, students will have acquired an advanced level of Korean language proficiency both in speaking and writing for various communication purposes

Level 5

  • Students learn passives and reporting statements
  • Students learn to express opinions, make arguments, and debate formal topics relating to politics, economics and social issues
  • Understanding of Korean news and newspaper editorials and drawing an analogy, a comparison, a parallel and a distinction between two events

Level 6

  • Students learn the passive form and the subjunctive mood
  • Students learn how to express and assert his or her opinions in formal settings. – Suggest, help, favor, accept, refuse, apologize etc.
  • Students are able to learn Korean through their study of a proverb, a dialect, an onomatopoeic, and an interjection

TOPIK Preparation Course

We will schedule specific classes in March and August to help students who are preparing for the TOPIK exams in April and September each year.
